The Pickup Music Project

The Pickup Music Project takes its name from its initial aim – to make public spaces that allow for impromptu pick-up music making, just as public basketball courts allow for pick-up basketball.

We believe in the importance of active music making – in the magic of humans making music in the same place and at the same time. We create the conditions for such social soundmaking by way of our second favorite activity: building things.

We build big "instruments." Because of their design, size, and novelty, these instruments – which we call interactive sound sculptures – invite and encourage musical participation from all levels. Experienced musicians enjoy composing for them, just as "non-musicians" enjoy playing them.

Our collective skills span the fields of programming, acoustics research, metalworking, woodworking, music production, composition, and plumbing. Plus, we're all practicing musicians.

Combine our love of making music and building things, with our strange skillset, and you get The Pickup Music Project.

At our core, we love sounds. We love listening to them, making them, and most of all, making them with others. Our aim is to create opportunities for others to experience this same joy, to engage with sound in a new way, and to pickup music.
